Netflix Unveils Trailer for Dark French Reimagining of The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Netflix Announces Dark Adaptation of Victor Hugo Classic

Netflix has released the official trailer for a new French period drama adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 1831 Gothic novel, *The Hunchback of Notre-Dame*. Titled *The Hunchback, Soul of Paris*, the film promises a macabre and gritty retelling that departs significantly from lighter cinematic interpretations, such as Disney’s 1996 animated musical.

Directed by Jean-François Richet, the movie embraces the darker and more ghastly elements of the original source material. According to reports, the project is scheduled to premiere globally on Netflix on November 27, 2026.

Plot and Setting

Set in 1830s Paris, the narrative unfolds against a backdrop of cholera outbreaks and mounting revolutionary unrest.

• Quasimodo: Portrayed as a stonemason who is hunted by police while trying to save Esmeralda, a dancer he loves.
• The Conflict: Quasimodo's apparent immunity to cholera makes him the target of a scientist seeking to experiment on his body.

Cast and Creative Team

The film features a prominent French cast led by:

• Vincent Cassel as the title character
• Karim Leklou
• Daphné Patakia
• Benjamin Voisin

Director Jean-François Richet noted in interviews that the film draws inspiration from archival research linking Hugo's character to a real stonemason the author reportedly encountered, grounding the narrative in a plausible historical premise rather than a direct true story.

Verification and Release Details

Viewers interested in tracking the film can watch the official trailer directly on Netflix’s official channels or entertainment platforms covering the release.
