Jose Mourinho Backs Kylian Mbappe Following Backlash Over Mao Zedong Comments

Mourinho Addresses the Controversy

Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho has defended forward Kylian Mbappe, stating that the player acted "very responsibly" by issuing a swift apology for comments regarding China's late leader Mao Zedong. Speaking at a pre-match news conference ahead of Sunday's La Liga fixture against Racing Santander, Mourinho remarked on the modern media landscape, noting that "often the best thing you can do is keep your mouth shut" due to the numerous risks associated with public commentary.

The controversy began after Mbappe appeared on the French talk show *The Bridge*. During the program, the 27-year-old discussed his football nickname—which references his significant influence within the sport—and was asked by the host about memes that made him laugh. Mbappe mentioned a video featuring a "Chinese dictator," after which the show displayed a meme superimposing the player's face onto an image resembling Mao Zedong.

Fallout and Apology

• Social Media Backlash: The broadcast sparked widespread criticism online in China and internationally.
• Commercial Impact: Several Chinese brands reportedly dropped Mbappe following the incident.
• Public Apology: On Tuesday, the Real Madrid forward released a statement describing his remarks as "ill-judged" and acknowledging that his comments had caused hurt in China and among Chinese communities globally.

Mourinho praised the immediate response from both the player and the club, stating that Mbappe demonstrated "true class" through his apology. The manager also addressed questions regarding the potential misuse of artificial intelligence to generate fake videos, affirming that he remains unconcerned and feels well-represented by the club and his player.

Observers note that high-profile athletes face intense global scrutiny across digital platforms, where spontaneous remarks on talk shows can quickly generate international repercussions.
