BSNL Launches Prepaid Plans Bundled with Accident and Cyber-Fraud Insurance

Overview of BSNL Insurance Initiative

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in collaboration with The Oriental Insurance Company Limited (OICL), has introduced a new initiative bundling insurance coverage with select prepaid plans. This move aims to provide financial security to users—particularly those in rural areas and the informal labor sector—without requiring an additional premium beyond the standard recharge cost.

Plan Details

BSNL has introduced insurance benefits specifically for the following Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs):

• STV 202: Provides 28 days of validity, 300 voice minutes, and 5GB of data (followed by restricted speeds). It includes accidental death coverage of Rs 1 lakh and cyber-fraud protection of Rs 10,000.
• STV 2449: Offers an annual (365 days) subscription with unlimited voice calls and 2GB of data per day. This plan also includes the same insurance benefits as the STV 202.

Insurance Coverage and Terms

According to BSNL, the insurance coverage activates 24 hours after the recharge is successfully completed. Key details include:

• Accidental Death Cover: Provides a sum insured of Rs 1,00,000. It covers specific events such as road accidents, electrocution, lightning strikes, snake bites, and burns. Incidents must be reported to OICL within 48 hours.
• Cyber-Fraud Cover: Provides protection up to Rs 10,000 for losses resulting from phishing, email spoofing, or theft of funds, provided the BSNL number is linked to a bank account. Incidents must be reported within seven days.
