Sony Announces Retro-Inspired Translucent PS5 Controllers and Console Covers

Sony Revives 90s Aesthetics with the Prism Range

Sony has announced a new lineup of hardware accessories for the PlayStation 5, tapping into nostalgic 1990s design trends with a series of translucent finishes. Dubbed the Prism range, the collection includes both DualSense wireless controllers and matching console covers designed to give hardware a see-through look.

The accessories are offered in three distinct colors: Flare Orange, Emerald Green, and Graphite Gray. According to Sony, the items feature a premium glossy sheen intended to provide a sleek aesthetic while offering a visible look at the internal design and craftsmanship of the controllers and console.

Pricing and Availability Dates

For consumers looking to purchase the new hardware, Sony has confirmed specific pricing tiers and release dates across multiple regions:

• Prism PS5 Controllers: Priced at $84.99 USD / £74.99 / €84.99, positioning them slightly above the standard DualSense controller cost in line with previous special edition releases.
• Prism Console Covers: Priced at $74.99 USD / £64.99 / €74.99.
• Pre-orders: Scheduled to begin on November 10, 2026.
• Official Launch: Set for February 4, 2027.

Industry Context and Background

The launch follows a broader industry trend toward translucent hardware, reminiscent of popular electronics and gaming consoles from the late 1990s. Competitors such as Microsoft have also introduced see-through hardware options for the Xbox series, fueling consumer interest in retro-styled gaming gear.

Sony designer Leo Cardoso noted that the company aimed to bring back the iconic transparent trend in a modern way that aligns with the industrial design of the PlayStation 5.
