Tonga Secures Semifinal Spot with Narrow Victory Over Samoa

Thriller in Parramatta

Tonga has advanced to the men's Rugby League World Cup semifinals following a hard-fought 20-18 victory over Pacific rivals Samoa at Western Sydney Stadium. The match, described by spectators as a classic encounter, remained closely contested until the final whistle, with Tonga holding on despite a late surge from the Samoan side.

Decisive Moments

While Samoa scored four tries to Tonga's three, the outcome was largely determined by the goal-kicking of Isaiya Katoa, who successfully converted three goals and added a penalty goal. Key highlights included:

• Opening Tries: Haumole Olakau'atu and Rob Toia provided an early lead for Tonga in the first half.
• Samoan Resilience: Brian To'o scored twice for Samoa, keeping his side within striking distance before the break.
• The Heroics: Prop Addin Fonua-Blake scored the decisive try late in the second half, breaking through the Samoan defensive line to secure the lead for Tonga.
• Final Scare: Samoa attempted a final offensive push, but an effort by Sua Fa'alogo in the closing moments was ruled out by officials after replays showed him stepping on the touchline.

Tournament Implications

Following this win, Tonga is set to compete against New Zealand in the first men's semifinal at Hunter Stadium in Newcastle. Australia will face Samoa in the second men's semifinal in Sydney on Sunday. Tournament organizers noted that this match concluded a group stage that had previously seen several high-scoring blowouts, offering a high-tension conclusion to the pool play.
