Thirty Years of Arab Journalism
Al Jazeera marked its 30-year anniversary on November 1, 2026, by announcing a comprehensive transformation of its network operations. Launched initially on November 1, 1996, the Qatar-based broadcaster has historically challenged dominant political narratives and provided unprecedented platforms for regional political debate.
Reflecting on this legacy during a special anniversary episode of the network’s Arabic-language *Baad al-Bath* podcast, veteran anchor Khadija Benguenna and former news director Ahmad al-Sheikh credited the network with introducing breaking news alerts, continuous live coverage, and independent reporting standards to the Arab world.
Arabic-Language Restructuring
The anniversary coincides with a major restructuring of Al Jazeera Media Network’s Arabic-language services, dividing operations into a three-channel structure designed to separate rolling news, live broadcasting, and in-depth reporting.
- Al Jazeera Now: A newly introduced service dedicated to breaking developments as they unfold, operating without scheduled bulletins or a fixed programme grid.
- Al Jazeera Mubasher: Continuing its focus on uninterrupted live event coverage without presenter or correspondent commentary.
- Al Jazeera Arabic: The flagship channel retaining standard bulletins while pivoting towards investigative journalism, historical analysis, and in-depth programming.
According to Asef Hamidi, managing director of Al Jazeera Arabic, the changes aim to address the growing volume and complexity of contemporary news. Network Director General Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal Al Thani described the strategy for Al Jazeera's fourth decade as being guided by three core principles: immediacy, understanding, and the human dimension. The network has also announced plans for 33 new programmes under the slogan "Your questions are our questions."
Digital Expansion and Technological Transformation
Beyond traditional television, Al Jazeera is strengthening its digital reporting across Palestine, Egypt, Sudan, the Gulf, and Syria through dedicated regional platforms, alongside plans for a new cultural initiative provisionally scheduled for late 2027.
Concurrently, the network is advancing a technological overhaul through "The Core," an artificial intelligence initiative developed in collaboration with Google Cloud and announced in December 2025. Set for an initial phase launch on November 1, the project includes tools like *Orbit* to assist with newsroom workflows, monitoring, and archive management. Network leadership emphasized that artificial intelligence will serve to assist rather than replace human editorial judgement.
